UNCSW

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The economic empowerment of women is essential to achieving gender equality and sustainable development. However, women continue to face disproportionate levels of exploitation in the workplace, including wage inequality, sexual harassment, and lack of access to decent work. Addressing these challenges is critical to ensuring that all women have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Policy and Advocacy

Review and Monitoring

UNCSW reviews the progress made by member states in implementing international commitments related to gender equality, such as the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. It assesses the challenges, successes, and areas needing improvement.

Each year, the commission focuses on a specific thematic area that is crucial for advancing women's rights. These thematic areas cover topics such as women's economic empowerment, violence against women, access to education and healthcare, political participation, and more.

Sharing Best Practices

UNCSW provides a forum for member states to share successful strategies and best practices for promoting gender equality, which can then be adapted and implemented globally.

Advocacy for Women's Rights

The commission advocates for the removal of discriminatory laws and practices that hinder women's rights and gender equality. It promotes legal reforms and policy changes to create a more equitable and inclusive society.

Engagement with Civil Society

UNCSW actively engages with non-governmental organizations, women's groups, and other civil society actors to ensure diverse perspectives and experiences are included in discussions and decision-making processes.
